END OF WATCH

Vu Nguyen

December 19th, 2007

On Wednesday, December 19th, Detective Vu Nguyen, a seven year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, was tragically taken from us.

At approximately 2:00 PM, Detective Vu Nguyen and his partner, who were assigned to the Gang Suppression Unit, were patrolling known gang hangouts near 41st Ave and 37th Street in South Sacramento, a community hit hard by gang violence. As they came upon a known gang house, a subject standing outside ran and Detective Nguyen gave chase on foot, through yards and over fences. His partner drove their vehicle around the front of the houses in an attempt to intercept the fleeing subject. Seconds later several gunshots were fired.

Detective Nguyen was discovered with a life threatening gunshot wound and transported to the hospital where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

An intensive and exhaustive manhunt ensued consisting of officers from numerous law enforcement agencies. Tips from the public and tireless investigative efforts led to the apprehension of Detective Nguyen’s ruthless killer in the early morning hours the next day. The killer was 16 years old and a known gang member with a troublesome past.

Detective Nguyen was married in April of 2007 and is survived by his wife.

Detective Nguyen paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving the citizens and community he swore to protect. He was doing a job he loved and loved the people he worked with. The loss of Detective Vu Nguyen will not only affect his partners, fellow brothers and sisters in law enforcement, but the community he served.
